Middle schoolers occupy a special niche at Oakwood...
We provide the 7th and 8th graders a protective shelter on the one hand and a widening school community on the other.
Middle schoolers are involved in many aspects of secondary school life (they attend town meeting, take special studies classes and participate in the Arts Festival) yet a number of co- and extra-curricular activites ensure that they enjoy their own sense of identity and autonomy.
These include separate sports teams, advisory groups, middle school orchestra and chorus, separate school and community service opportunites, lunch clubs, dances and field trips.
There are a number of extra-curricular clubs and activities designed specifically for middle school students. In addition to basketball and volleyball teams, the middle school sports program expanded to include flag football, girls' soccer, and cross country teams. All of these teams have a "no-cut" policy to promote participation.
Other middle school activities:
- Debate Team
- The Banana (student newspaper)
- CalArts Student-taught Classes
- Middle School Dance
- Variety Show
- Jazz Band
- Middle shool students also participate in clubs that are open to other grades such as OSADD (Oakwood Students Against Drunk Driving), Cultural Awareness, Harry Potter, and Dungeons and Dragons.
