MUSIC DEPARTMENT: Spring Concert News!

The High School Orchestra and Chorus will be doing separate concerts this spring. The High School Chorus and Choraliers will perform on Friday, May 16 at 7:00 p.m. and the High School Orchestra will present their concert on Saturday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m. Both concerts will be held in the Music Dance and Athletic Center gymnasium.

The Chorus Concert promises to be new and exciting with the addition of film clips created specifically for the Chorus. In a bit of reverse engineering, director Rich Brunner selected music for the concert and then asked student and faculty filmmakers to create films that represented and embellished the music. Students and faculty members have created films to coincide with Beethoven's Hallelujah from the Mount of Olives, Laura Farnell's She Walks In Beauty, Z. Randall Stroope's Omnia Sol, Morten Lauridsen's O Nata Lux, Gabriel Faure's Pavane, David L. Brunner's Yo Le Canto, the spiritual Give Me Jesus, and a student composition, The Solace of Kindred Things.

Other pieces on the program include: Hal'luya, the Medieval Carol Riu, Riu Chiu, the spirituals If I Got My Ticket and Sit Down Servant, William Billings' Africa and selections from the Liebeslieder Waltzer of Johannes Brahms.

The High School Orchestra has created an eclectic and challenging program for full orchestra, string orchestra, woodwind ensemble, and brass and percussion pieces. Under the direction of Leslie Sigmund, Ben McIntosh, and Ivan Johnson, the concert will open with Aaron Copland's classic Fanfare for the Common Man and then the full orchestra will perform Serge Prokofiev's "The Montagues and the Capulets" from the ballet Romeo and Juliet, Carmen Suite No. 1 by Georges Bizet, and Ralph Vaughan Williams' English Folk Song Suite.

Wind Ensemble will present Rhythm Danse by Richard L. Saucedo and Sòlas Ané by Samuel R. Hazo, and the String Ensemble will play Trauermusik by Paul Hindemith, and Concerto in G Minor by Antonio Vivaldi with guest artist Andrew McIntosh. A small chamber group will present the premiere of student work, The Mind Reader, and the Mingus Big Band will perform selections by Charles Mingus.

Tickets for the concerts will be sold at the door. The price is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Anyone wishing to attend both concerts will get the second ticket free!
