From its inception to the present day, parents have played a key roll in Oakwood's success. It was a group of parents who founded the school and volunteer parents continue to help it thrive.

The Board of Trustees is the governing body responsible for Oakwood's mission and long term well-being. Comprised primarily of parents, the Board also includes alumni, past Oakwood parents and members of the national educational community. The Board ensures the continuing health of the school's plant, endowment, and financial aid program. The Board also oversees Oakwood's building projects. The Play Space (above) was open for "business" during the spring of 2007.

Link To Our Board Of Trustees

In the fall of 1998, the Board of Trustees embarked on a Long Range Strategic Planning Process, the goals of which were:
  • to assess systematically the current strengths and weaknesses of the school
  • to envision the direction of institutional growth and change over the next decade
  • to determine, as concretely as possible, how to achieve the strategic goals adopted by the board and leadership of the school
And in 2001, it published its strategic goals which this year, are again being reviewed.

In all, the Board desired to emphasize its overriding commitment to honoring the school's legacy, enriching its present, and safeguarding its future. It endeavored to develop strategic recommendations that provided a clear vision without being overly prescriptive and to envision a school that strives to understand the tensions that arise between the school's core values and the pressures of popular culture that would impact or undermine those values; to chart new directions where appropriate; and to contribute to the educational and civic communities where possible.

Summary Highlights of the 2001 Strategic Plan
  • Leadership: Maintain the strength of the school's leadership and governance, ensuring the continuity of policies and practices, the integrity of the school's mission, and the health of the school's future.
  • Education: Preserve and promote the richness of the educational program and environment to nourish students' intellect and character, honor their uniqueness, sustain their vitality, and foster their sense of connection to and responsibility for their community.
  • Personnel: Ensure the quality, continuity, well being, and continuous growth and renewal, of the professional staff and other school personnel.
  • Building: Develop campuses that serve and enrich the educational program, ensure the safety and welfare of the students, and accommodate future growth.
  • Diversity: Strive for greater diversity and the shared appreciation of difference that enriches experience and honors Oakwood's fundamental purposes.
  • Development: Secure the school's future by fostering a culture of giving, increasing fundraising, improving participation, striving for affordability, and substantially increasing the endowment.
  • Technology: Make effective use of technology to increase educational opportunities and administrative efficiency, taking into careful account the impact of such technology on children's healthy growth and relationships.
  • Marketing and Communications: Reach out to our communities through the admissions and development offices, school communications efforts, and the involvement of parents, trustees, students and alumni.
