Oakwood students have the freedom to pursue their inter-
ests beyond the core program and Special Studies. Often initiated by the students them-
selves, activities as diverse as Oak-
wood's Robotics Team and the Cult-
ural Awareness Association offer students a wide array of ways to satisfy their curiosity and make meaning-
ful contributions to the community.

All voices are heard, valued and respected.

Oakwood children thrive in an environment where it is safe to ask questions, to take risks; where diversity in culture, opinion and learning style is valued because we believe the first step to knowledge is an open mind. Students are encouraged to ask questions, to experiment, to share their ideas and their excitement. It is respect for each individual voice that makes Oakwood special. Here, every child is known and valued.

Town Meeting

At least once a week, secondary school students, faculty and administrators gather as a community for our Town Meeting, where the microphone is available to anyone who wishes to speak. Each meeting is different: an announcement publicizing an upcoming school or community event might be followed by a comedy skit; a student sharing her displeasure about a school policy might spark a spontaneous debate. Occasionally, the entire meeting will be devoted to a compelling school or global issue. Most importantly, Town Meeting is a place where all voices are heard and valued and respected.

Senior Project

When they have concluded their course work in May, seniors embark on a project of their choice. Recent senior projects have included law office apprenticeships, work in film and television, travel, photographic essays, and volunteer work with the Special Olympics. During the last three days of school, seniors return to Oakwood to share their experiences in seminars with their teachers and classmates.

Student Publications

Students at the secondary school may contribute to a variety of publications. Some examples include The Gorilla, Oakwood's official school newspaper, Lustro, yearbook, Art and Lit, and The Oak Leaf.

Student Council

The secondary school Student Council is an elected group with representatives from each grade level. The Council confers with the administration on matters of policy and procedure and works with the principal to arrange social events and community service projects. The Council also communicates student needs and concerns to the faculty.
