Oakwood's middle school program is college preparatory, but we are equally concerned with the quality of
children's experiences in the present. We believe that school must be rewarding in its own right, and not merely a step along a pathway to college.
The middle school curriculum combines several academic areas into an integrated educational experience. For students to appreciate the connections among English, social studies, science, computer and human development, the schedule provides generous
blocks of time in which the teachers from those subjects coordinate classes and projects.
For example, a study of the environmental impact of toxic waste might involve a debate about
the effectiveness of current legal restrictions, a discussion of the effects of radiation on
the human body, and internet research leading to a written report.

Middle schoolers occupy a special niche at Oakwood. We provide them a
protective shelter on the one hand and a widening school community on the other.
Middle schoolers are involved in many aspects of secondary school life
(they attend town meetings, take special studies classes and participate in the arts festival)
yet a number of co- and extra-curricular activities ensure that they enjoy their own sense of
identity and autonomy. These include separate sports teams, advisory groups, middle school
orchestra and chorus, separate school and community service opportunities, lunch clubs, dances
and field trips.
