Founding Mother Jessica Ryan

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.”
–Chinese Proverb

In the early days of our school, Jessica Ryan, one of Oakwood’s founding parents, planted an oak sapling in front of the elementary school on Moorpark. That tree never provided shade for her three children, but over time it grew and has provided shade for thousands of students.

Similarly, in 1967, founding parent Elizabeth Harmon Schappert donated the down payment for the school’s Magnolia campus that her children did not attend, but where generations of students have prospered in thought and imagination, in competence and character, as individuals and as members of a school community.

These founders took action and provided financial support beyond what would benefit their own children. They understood and believed in Oakwood as a model of progressive education, a place where children could flourish as thinkers, as artists, as athletes, and most of all, as human beings. A place of importance in the community. A place worthy of their investment of significant time and resources.

These founders made contributions in various ways over their lifetimes, and Oakwood welcomes and encourages your lifelong partnership, too. Elizabeth Harmon Schappert Plaque

A great way to have a bigger impact on Oakwood than you might have thought possible is by supplementing the other ways of giving to Oakwood through legacy giving. Legacy giving costs nothing today, but it signifies and deepens the connection we hope you feel with this place, whether you attended as a student or supported through tuition and gifts as a parent or grandparent. Legacy giving is a way of giving back and paying it forward so that future generations of students can also benefit from the experience that makes Oakwood so unique—a learning community that fosters independence of thought, intellectual integrity, and sensitivity to the needs of others, while preparing students for participation in a democratic society.

A gift by will, trust or beneficiary designation carries your philanthropic partnership with Oakwood into the future. To learn more about making a legacy gift to Oakwood, or to tell us you already have, please contact Nancy Leptuch Virrey in the Advancement Office at 818-732-3174.
