Accommodations FAQs

Q.  What accommodations are available to Oakwood students?
A.
Through the Support Services department, Oakwood offers accommodations such as extended time and computer use. Individual students and their parents meet with school administrators and support services staff to discuss specific needs and available accommodations.

Q.  How does a student receive accommodations at Oakwood?
A.
To be eligible for accommodations such as extended time on tests, or use of a computer for essay responses, secondary school students must make a formal request to the Support Services staff and provide the school with a recent psycho-educational or neuropsychological diagnostic report. This information will be reviewed to determine what accommodation(s), if any, will be granted. If an accommodation is granted, the need for the accommodation will be reviewed annually. It is possible that a student may be approved for accommodations at Oakwood but not for standardized testing such as the SAT.

Q.  How does a student use accommodations?
A.
If a student is eligible for accommodations in class, Support Services staff will explain how to go about making the most of the accommodation. In a personal conversation with each student, we will go over the Guidelines for Students and help coordinate testing as necessary with individual classroom teachers.

Q.  How does a student apply for accommodations on standardized tests?
A.
In order for a student to apply for accommodations on standardized tests such as the SAT, Oakwood is required to submit the student‘s complete diagnostic report to The College Board and/or ACT along with an eligibility form that states that the accommodations meet the guidelines set forth by The College Board and/or ACT, and that the student uses the accommodations on a regular and consistent basis in school. The determination of the student‘s eligibility to receive accommodation(s) on standardized tests is made by The College Board and/or ACT and not by Oakwood. Please contact Wendy Weicker, Director of Support Services if you have any questions regarding accommodations for standardized tests.

Q.  Who determines eligibility to receive accommodations on standardized tests?
A.
High school student eligibility for accommodations on standardized tests such as the PSAT, SAT, AP, or ACT, is determined by the College Board and ACT. It is possible that a student may be approved for accommodations at Oakwood but not for standardized testing. It is also possible that a student may be approved for accommodations on one standardized test but not another.

Q.  What documentation is required for accommodations on standardized tests?
A.
Both The College Board and ACT require that documentation for such a request meet specific criteria in order for students to be granted accommodations on these standardized tests.
