Sustainability

FOR ONE ANOTHER, FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, FOR THE LARGER WORLD

Oakwood School has long been committed to sustainability and caring for the earth, as noted in our Statement of Philosophy: “We believe that a school environment… should encourage young people to exercise increasing autonomy and responsibility—for one another, for the environment, and for the larger world.”

To this end, we commit to a school culture and environment that will:
  • Educate and empower our students to become impactful environmental champions
  • Model practices toward caring for our planet and stewarding our resources
  • Promote the health and sustainability of the people and land of our school, community, and planet
This report contains data and stories that indicate our school's progress, as well as our goals for the future. The goals that we set are adapted from the START (Sustainability Tracking, Analytics & Roadmap Tool) Framework from the Green Schools Alliance, a self-assessment tool that we implemented this year to benchmark our progress.

Oakwood has an ethical obligation to take part in the larger community and make an impact on the world. The Oakwood community, including students, faculty, administration, parents & guardians, acknowledges our obligation in an interconnected global society of humans and nature to commit to sustainable practices for a just and equitable future.

Through the work of the Sustainability Task Force, Oakwood made significant progress and also documented strides from prior years in the following areas:
  • COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
  • PHYSICAL PLANT
  • POLICY AND PROCEDURES
  • CURRICULUM
